The expansion of the Widener Building at Pennsylvania Hospital proved to be a challenging project.  Widener was one of the few remaining buildings that had not reached its maximum zoning height potential on the tight Center City site.  Vertical expansion was the only option.  Two new intensive care floors and a mechanical penthouse were added over an existing two-story ambulatory drive, emergency department and second floor.  A bridge truss supports the three new floors over the existing building. Renovation of the existing intensive care unit within the adjoining Schiedt building was combined on one of the floors to allow shared support services for maximum efficiency.  The project adds 45 state-of-the-art critical care beds.  The building was designed for continued vertical expansion of six more floors.
