The School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University engaged Ballinger to program, plan and establish feasibility, including cost and site requirements, for a new Medical Education Building on the East Baltimore Campus adjacent to the Hospital. Ballinger was ultimately selected to design the new facility, which is currently in progress.

The new building allows the School of Medicine to increase class size from 120 to 150 students, creates touch-down space for visiting and existing faculty, and provides an environment that students can call home. At the heart of the program is the “college” concept, splitting Hopkins’ large population of medical students into four vertically integrated colleges, each with its own adviser. Teaching spaces include two lecture halls which can be combined to seat 340 students, five teaching labs, a 60-seat academic computing center, case study room, and small group rooms. The three-story atrium located on the second level acts as a crossroads, encouraging social, informal learning and student / faculty interaction. The building is located on a prominent site on the Oval of the Medical Center Campus.
