College of Charleston

Having completed programming and master planning for the College’s entire 450,000 GSF School of Science and Math (SSM), Ballinger/Liollio designed the 125,000 SF new Science Building located on a prominent corner site adjacent to the city’s Historic District. The facility contains research and teaching labs, classrooms and faculty offices for the departments of Chemistry and Biology. The design strives to create technologically advanced, flexible science spaces while simultaneously fostering contact and interaction among the building’s users through a central sky-lit atrium, wide corridors, and casual study/meeting areas. The mass of this large building has been arranged along the site’s perimeter, maintaining the urban street edge at a height in-scale with its neighbors. The interior of the block is reserved for a “Charleston Garden”, an amenity accessible not only to the building users but also the largely residential neighborhood to the north of the site.
