Furman University

Ballinger designed the renovation and expansion of Furman's multidisciplinary Townes Science Center complex. The redesigned 205,000 SF facility now aligns with the University's nationally ranked science program and also enhances the integrated teaching and research model. The facility includes clusters of classrooms, teaching labs, research labs and faculty offices based around discipline specific research neighborhoods. The expansion includes a new 150-seat lecture hall, planetarium and science library. The complex is further enhanced by numerous integrated environmental initiatives that further the pedagogical goals of the science faculty and reinforce Furman’s commitment to sustainable design. As a result, the project received LEED Gold certification.
