Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital

The new 142,000 SF bed tower addition is part of a substantial expansion and modernization program at the Hospital's suburban campus. Connected to the existing building by a two-story central atrium, the triangular addition improves the quality of care at this location and provides an updated architectural identity for the Hospital. Focused on the family-centered care model of delivery, the new patient rooms are all private and have flexible acuity capability. The shape of the bed tower is influenced by its adjacency to wetlands, minimizing the building's impact on the natural setting and embracing the serenity of the lakeside views. The central atrium, connected to a healing garden, becomes the heart of the building and also a wayfinding tool for visitors.
