The Wistar Institute

The Wistar Institute is the nation’s oldest private biomedical research institution, founded in 1892. Today the Institute employs over 350 people conducting and supporting three main research programs: Gene Expression and Regulation; Immunology; and Molecular and Cellular Oncogenesis. The existing Wistar facility is a collection of buildings constructed in phases: Main (1894) & Addition (1930); Cancer Research Building (1974); and Animal Facility (1983). Ballinger provided existing facility assessment, programming, master planning, and conceptual design studies in support of strategic plan objectives: to develop a space program to support significant growth in principal investigator headcount and research space; to transform the research environment into one of a world-class research institution that enhances collaboration, interaction, and innovation; to provide a modern infrastructure that is flexible, efficient and easily maintained; to convey the Institute’s image and culture in the design of any new structure while respecting the tradition and context of its urban campus. Construction recently began for a new 100,000 SF research addition as well as extensive renovation.
