University of Maryland

Working in a highly constrained site, Ballinger designed an interdisciplinary research building for the University of Maryland. Given the Georgian character of the campus, the intention was to create highly flexible research labs, a new auditorium, and front door to Hornbake Plaza, setting in motion a long range plan to grow Life Sciences at the University. The design features the creation of a courtyard which maximizes daylight while meeting stringent building efficiency standards. Additionally, it creates a highly flexible lab module which can adapt to changing space ratios, such as lab to lab support, as well as evolving grant-driven allocations to individual principal investigators. The program also includes a 500-person lecture hall, service space and symposium commons. The project was designed according to LEED principles.
