University of Maryland Medical Center

The bi-directional expansion of the University of Maryland Medical Center focuses on increasing capacity for the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, and the adjacent emergency and general surgery departments. The project consists of eight floors of new clinical space, an expansion of the Emergency Department, a new National Trauma Training Center with seven simulation rooms, expansion of the Operating Suite, an expanded PACU, 64 new ICU patient rooms for the shock trauma and surgical programs, and a new Stat Lab and expanded Central Sterile Processing. All patient rooms in this addition have been upsized beyond minimum requirements to 360 SF, integrating the family into the healing process with a dedicated family zone in addition to the caregiver zone. With a goal of LEED Silver certification, the design incorporates sustainable building materials, a high performance envelope and energy efficient buildings systems that will benefit not just this building but the campus as a whole.
